Unable to restore a historic Chinatown building, the city of Fresno began demolishing it on Monday morning.
The 1920s-era Bow On Tong Association Building has been condemned since a fire in March 2022 made it unsafe to occupy.
The city bought the building in January 2025 with funds from the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development.
Plans call for an affordable housing project on the site, which is in the district of Councilmember Miguel Arias.

Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer also announced the nearby Peacock Building will either be restored or demolished and affordable housing will be built there, too.
The goal for the Peacock Building on F Street between Kern and Tulare streets is 85 affordable units.
In August 2023, the city secured $44 million from Gov. Newsom’s office for affordable housing in downtown and Chinatown.
