Hyundai Steel Company will build its first North American steel mill in Louisiana, a $5.8 billion investment expected to create 1,300 direct jobs and 4,100 indirect jobs, officials announced Monday.
Gov. Jeff Landry and President Donald Trump unveiled the project at the White House, attributing it to the administration’s tariff policies, Louisiana First News reported.
The facility, to be built on 1,700 acres in Donaldsonville’s RiverPlex MegaPark, will produce 2.7 million metric tons of steel annually using electric arc furnace technology, cutting emissions by 70% compared to traditional methods.
Hyundai will partner with the Port of South Louisiana to build a deep-water dock and work with Entergy Louisiana on transmission upgrades.
The state will provide a $100 million grant for infrastructure, and Hyundai will participate in the Quality Jobs program.
Louisiana leaders praised the investment, citing economic benefits and workforce development. River Parishes Community College will establish a training center to prepare workers.
Construction is set to begin in 2026.
