A Bakersfield man pleaded guilty Monday to manufacturing a bomb and illegally possessing a destructive device, federal prosecutors said.

Robert Lawrence Hunt, 40, admitted to constructing an explosive device filled with metal screws between July 4 and 5, 2022, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Authorities discovered the device near a community pool in a residential neighborhood close to Hunt’s home.

Hunt, a convicted felon with prior robbery and burglary convictions, is prohibited from possessing or manufacturing firearms or explosives.

He has been in custody since September 2024 and faces up to 15 years in prison for possessing a destructive device and 10 years for manufacturing it. His sentencing is set for July 14, 2025.
