French President Emmanuel Macron has called for Europe to prepare for the possibility of defending Ukraine without U.S. assistance, according to NBC News.
In a prime-time address, Macron emphasized the need for European nations to bolster their defense capabilities and support Ukraine’s resistance against Russian aggression.
“I want to believe that the U.S. will stand by our side, but we have to be ready for that not to be the case,” Macron stated from the Élysée Palace. He stressed the importance of investing in defense and military capabilities to protect European security and Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Macron’s address follows recent tensions between the U.S. and Ukraine, including a heated exchange at the White House involving President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Vice President JD Vance. The incident led to a temporary pause in U.S. aid to Ukraine, prompting concerns about the future of American support.
The French leader echoed sentiments expressed by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, suggesting that European forces may need to intervene in Ukraine if necessary. “Our forces will be there if necessary to guarantee peace, not before a peace agreement is signed,” Macron clarified.
Both Macron and Starmer are working to mend U.S.-Ukraine relations while maintaining their support for Zelenskyy. Their efforts come as Ukraine faces pressure to negotiate a ceasefire with Russia, though concerns remain about the potential consequences of such an agreement.
