Starting today, callers with a 559 area code must dial “1” plus the area code and telephone number for all calls, including local calls with the same area code, the California Public Utilities Commission says.
The change is part of the 559/357 area code overlay, which will not require customers to change their existing area code.
The overlay is the addition of another area code to the same region. The overlay will not require customers to change their existing number but will require them to get used to a new dialing procedure to complete local phone calls.
The new 357 area code will serve the same geographic region as the 559 area code, which includes Clovis, Coalinga, Fresno, Madera, Porterville, Reedley, Selma, Visalia, and unincorporated areas.
The CPUC said three-digit numbers such as 911, 988, 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711, and 811 will not be affected.
Beginning March 26, consumers requesting new or additional telephone numbers may receive a 357 or 559 area code, depending on availability.
The CPUC urged consumers to update items such as stationery, checks, business cards, and advertisements to ensure the correct area code is included.
