Royal Caribbean International is set to make history by basing a cruise ship in San Diego for the first time. Starting October 2026, Serenade of the Seas will offer three-, four-, and seven-night Mexican Riviera cruises from the Southern California port.
This expansion marks a significant development for West Coast cruisers, who traditionally have fewer options compared to their East Coast counterparts. “We want to give thrill-seekers on the West Coast more opportunities to enjoy a Royal Caribbean vacation for themselves,” said Kara Wallace, chief marketing officer for Royal Caribbean International.
San Diego’s strategic location caters to both drive-in and fly-in markets, with the airport just a 9-minute drive from the cruise terminal. The city offers attractions like vibrant restaurants, beaches, and historic areas for pre- or post-cruise exploration.
Expanded West Coast Fleet
Serenade of the Seas will join four other Royal Caribbean vessels cruising from the West Coast in the 2026-27 season. Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas, and Voyager of the Seas will operate from Los Angeles, offering various itineraries to destinations like Catalina Island, Ensenada, and Cabo San Lucas.
The cruise line’s expanded West Coast presence includes the relocation of larger ships to Los Angeles and the introduction of new ports like La Paz, Mexico. Bookings for these 2026-27 sailings open to the general public on February 13, following a preview for loyalty program members.
