The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Wednesday night west of Orange Cove, they said in a statement Thursday morning.

At approximately 7:45 p.m., officers responded to a solo vehicle crash on Manning Avenue, west of Hansen Avenue.

A Honda Accord traveling eastbound at high speed veered onto the right shoulder, colliding with multiple trees in an orange orchard before overturning.

A 36-year-old male passenger sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver fled on foot.

A CHP helicopter and officers from the Orange Cove Police Department searched the area but didn’t find the suspect.

Got a Tip?

It is unclear whether alcohol or drugs were involved.

The CHP urges anyone with information about the crash or the driver’s whereabouts to contact the Fresno Area CHP at (559) 262-0400.
