A wrong-way driver traveling at speeds of 80 to 90 mph on Highway 99 was arrested after a 9-1-1 caller alerted authorities, preventing a potential tragedy, the CHP said on Wednesday.

The driver was spotted heading south in the northbound lanes south of Manning Avenue.
California Highway Patrol officers stopped traffic near Second Street in Selma, where the suspect — said by authorities to be nearly three times the legal blood alcohol limit — made a U-turn directly in front of officers.

He was taken into custody and booked on DUI charges, the CHP said.
Authorities credited the quick-thinking caller and officers’ swift response for saving lives — including that of the driver.
