Jewish author and professor Peter Beinart is urging Jewish communities to reconsider their relationship with Israel, arguing that longstanding narratives of persecution have overshadowed historical complexities and moral responsibilities.

In an interview with Fareed Zakaria on GPS, Beinart, author of “Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza,” discussed his transformation from a strong supporter of Israel to a staunch critic.

“Israel is the most dangerous place for a Jew to live,” Beinart said. “When you deny people their basic rights, you inflict tremendous violence on them, and that violence endangers you as well.”

Jews Should Value Compassion, not Oppression: Beinart

Beinart contends that Israel is being treated as a religious entity, making it difficult for critics to challenge its actions without feeling like traitors. As a religious Orthodox Jew, he said he has struggled with the perception that siding with the humanity of Gazans puts him at odds with his own community.

His views have sparked intense debate among Jewish communities, where opinions on Israel remain deeply divided.

Despite criticism, Beinart maintains that Jewish values should lead people toward compassion rather than oppression.

Through personal reflection and historical analysis, his book calls for a reevaluation of entrenched beliefs and a shift toward a more ethical and inclusive Jewish identity.
