The Border 2 Fire, burning in the northwest aspect of the Otay Mountain Wilderness, has scorched 5,389 acres and remains just 10% contained as of Friday morning, CalFire reported.

Authorities deployed 692 personnel, including 23 engines, 16 water tenders, 10 helicopters, 8 bulldozers, 24 hand crews, and 53 additional resources.

A significant augmentation of resources is expected to arrive today as crews battle the fire’s spread.

Unified Command, led by CalFire San Diego Unit and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, reported extreme fire behavior overnight, including long-range spotting.

Crews were supported by night-flying CalFire Fire-Hawk helicopters, while fixed-wing aircraft are expected to assist this morning.

Evacuation orders have been issued for Zones SDC-2389A, SDC-2464, and SDC-2543.

Evacuation warnings are issued for Zones SDC-2389B, SDC-2461, SDC-2462, SDC-2463, SDC-2541, and SDC-2542.

Impacted residents have been directed to shelters at Southwestern College in Chula Vista and Edwards Theater in El Cajon.

Road closures include Alta Road near Otay Mesa Road and Otay Lakes Road between Wueste and State Route 94.

The cause of the wildfire remains under investigation.

Note: Story was updated at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 24 to reflect the fire growing over 1,000 acres.
