Fresno County, historically one of the top counties in the state for traffic fatalities, saw fewer fatal collisions during the holidays and in 2024 due to efforts like its recent Traffic Safety Campaign.

The campaign, which ran from Nov. 25, 2024, until Thursday, involved the CHP, Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, and Fresno County District Attorney’s Office.

Between the weeks of Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, Fresno Area CHP investigated four fatal collisions, a decrease from the same period in 2023 when it investigated 10 fatal accidents.

Fatal Collisions Fall in 2024

For 2024, the Fresno Area CHP reported 79 fatal collisions compared to 87 in 2023.

The Traffic Safety Campaign focused on education and awareness that included public service announcements, graphics, and videos in English and Spanish about the dangers of distracted driving, speeding, and driving under the influence, officials said.

The Fresno Area CHP also conducted saturation patrols and enforcement efforts to complement the campaign’s messaging.

“While one preventable death is too many, the reduction in overall deaths at the end of the year is encouraging,” said Nathan Magsig, chair of the Fresno County Board of Supervisors. “Thanks to all of our county departments, agencies, and media partners for their assistance in educating our community.”
