FBI agents raided the home of Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Brian Williams in connection with a bomb threat he allegedly made against City Hall earlier this year. Mayor Karen Bass’s office was notified of the search and immediately placed Williams on administrative leave.

“The Mayor takes this matter very seriously,” said Bass’s spokesperson Zach Seidl. “When the threat was reported, LAPD investigated and determined there was no immediate danger. Following additional investigation, LAPD referred this matter to the FBI for further investigation.”

The Los Angeles Police Department’s initial investigation determined Williams was likely the “source of the threat.” However, Williams’ attorney Dmitry Gorin stated that his client “strongly maintains his innocence and intends to vigorously fight the allegations.”

The news shocked city councilmembers, who were still trying to comprehend why someone in such a powerful position would make such a threat. Mayor Bass emphasized her commitment to public safety, stating, “My number one job as Mayor is to keep Angelenos safe.”

Williams was appointed as deputy mayor of public safety in February 2023, overseeing several key departments including the LAPD and LAFD. His close connection to the LAPD is cited as the reason for the FBI taking over the investigation.

Prior to his role in the mayor’s office, Williams served as the executive director of the Los Angeles County Civilian Oversight Commission, which oversees the Sheriff’s Department. He has represented Mayor Bass at various events, including the recent swearing-in of new L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman.
