SUSANVILLE — A California prison inmate has been killed in an attack by two other inmates, corrections officials said Wednesday.

Juan M. Boyzo, 25, was attacked Monday night in a day room at the remote High Desert State Prison in Susanville, northwest of Reno, Nevada.

Correctional officers detained two inmates after breaking up the assault and recovering two inmate-made weapons. They were identified as Joseph Michael Rogelio Gama, 22, and Joseph Bustamante Sua, 29.

Merced Inmate Serving 7-Year Term

Sua is serving a seven-year sentence from Merced County for possession of a controlled substance in jail or prison. He entered the prison in May 2019.

Gama is serving a 15-year sentence from Stanislaus County for assault with a firearm inflicting great bodily injury and a street gang enhancement. He has been incarcerated at the prison since July 2016.

Boyzo died at an outside hospital of numerous puncture wounds to his head and back, officials said.

The victim was serving a 12-year sentence from Monterey County for second-degree robbery with a street gang enhancement.

Prior Deadly Attack at the Prison

Inmate Richard Prieto, 44, died at the Susanville prison in January in an attack by two other inmates.

Officials said Jose R. Castillo, 26, and Victor M. Zapien, 31, stabbed Prieto before officers fired a warning shot and used chemical agents to stop the attack.
