A new report based on C.D.C. health surveys shows that the number of young people who identify as transgender has almost doubled in recent years, indicating a significant rise in the transgender population of the United States.

The report shows that 1.4 percent of 13- to 17-year-olds and 1.3 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds identified as transgender, compared with about 0.5 percent of all adults.

Experts attribute the rise to young people increasingly having the language and social acceptance to explore their gender identities, as well as a shift in the notion of what it means to live as a transgender person. The data also show that young adults make up a disproportionately large part of the total L.G.B.T.Q. population in the United States, which varies state to state. The report comes at a time when Republican lawmakers across the country are seeking to prohibit medical care for transgender minors.

This data interactive summarizes key findings from The Williams Institute report How Many Adults and Youth Identify as Transgender in the United States?
