The adult son of former Fresno City Councilmember Cynthia Sterling and another man were shot to death Sunday night outside a northwest hookah lounge.

Fresno police confirmed Monday that Felix Hawkins, 41, and Akili Moffett, 32, died after they were shot following a physical confrontation.

Hawkins is the son of Sterling, who served on the city council from 2003 to 2011.

When police arrived at “The O” Hookah Lunge in the 6700 block of North Millburn Avenue shortly before 11 p.m., they found Hawkins with multiple gunshot wounds. He died minutes later at the scene.

Moffett was driven to Community Regional Medical Center with a single gunshot to his upper body, He died there shortly later while being rendered medical aid, police said.

Detectives continue to interview witnesses and locate video surveillance footage in hopes of identifying the shooters.

Detectives Need Tips to Solve These Homicides

The department asks that anyone with information on shooting contact Valley Crime Stoppers at 498-STOP (7867). You may also contact homicide detective V. Miranda at (559) 621-2452 or detective J. Alexander at (559) 621-2445.

“We don’t know how many shooters,” Lt. Paul Cervantes said. “There were a number of shell casings. We believe a handgun was used. We know Mr. Hawkins and Mr. Moffett were involved in a physical confrontation. The sequence of events that happened thereafter is very significant for us. This is why we need assistance from individuals that were present … to paint a clearer picture for us.”

Detectives said that between 30 and 50 people were attending a private party inside the lounge.
