Recent polls show Vice President Kamala Harris gaining ground against former President Donald Trump in the race for the White House.

According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, Harris now leads Trump 45% to 41% among registered voters, widening her advantage from a previous 1-point lead in July.

Democratic Enthusiasm Rises After Biden’s Exit

The poll, conducted over eight days ending Wednesday, reveals Harris’s growing support among key demographics. “Harris led Trump by 49% to 36% – or 13 percentage points – among both women voters and Hispanic voters,” the survey found. This marks a significant increase from her previous 9-point lead among women and 6-point lead among Hispanics in July.

The poll also revealed increased enthusiasm among Democratic voters, with 73% reporting they were more excited about voting in November after Harris entered the race.

While Trump maintains his edge among white voters and men, his lead among voters without a college degree has narrowed to 7 points, down from 14 points in July.

The shifting landscape follows President Joe Biden’s decision to end his re-election bid on July 21, after a poor debate performance against Trump. Since then, Harris has gained momentum in national polls and crucial swing states.

Matt Wolking, a Republican strategist who worked on Trump’s 2020 campaign, acknowledged the challenge, stating, “It’s obvious that running against Harris is more challenging for Trump given the shift in these numbers, but it’s certainly not insurmountable.”

The poll also revealed increased enthusiasm among Democratic voters, with 73% reporting they were more excited about voting in November after Harris entered the race. Additionally, 52% of Harris supporters said they were voting primarily to support her as a candidate, rather than to oppose Trump.

Candidates Face Contrasting Strengths on Key Issues

However, the economy remains a strong point for Trump, with voters favoring his approach 45% to 36%. Harris, on the other hand, holds a significant advantage on abortion policy, leading Trump 47% to 31%.

As the campaign intensifies, both candidates face challenges and opportunities in their quest for the presidency.
