More than a month after a devastating wildfire on Bear Mountain destroyed Valley PBS’s transmitter and broadcast equipment and caused extensive damage to the tower and transmitters, the station is broadcasting through airwaves again.

But you’ll need to rescan your televisions to pick up the signal that’s now being broadcast by Cocola Broadcasting Companies in a temporary arrangement to get Channel 18.1, one of Valley PBS’s four digital channels, back on the air.

To rescan for over-the-air signals, viewers can look on some TV remotes for a button marked “menu” that includes a broadcast option and auto programming.

Customers of DISH Network in the Fresno/Visalia area and Vyve Broadband (formerly Northland) in Oakhurst and Coarsegold now have access to 18.1, Valley PBS Chief Operating Officer Robert Mollison told GV Wire on Thursday.

But customers in the Bakersfield area are still cut off from an over-the-air signal, he said.

“We are working tirelessly to restore our broadcast capabilities in Kern County and hope to have that reestablished soon,” he said.

Valley PBS’s three other digital channels, 18.2, 18.3, and 18.4, remain unavailable for now.

Other Options for Viewers with Internet

Viewers also can access Valley PBS through Comcast Cable, the livestream on valleypbs.org, and online services such as Hulu, YouTube TV, and Roku.

The costs of repairing the equipment, which was damaged in the June Lightning Complex fire, is estimated at $2 million and will take several months to complete. Support for the rebuilding efforts can be made at valleypbs.org/tower or by calling 800-801-6500.
