Trita Parsi, Ph.D, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, spoke with CNN about the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh and the potential risks of escalation.

Parsi suggested that the strike could hinder ceasefire negotiations, disrupt the prospects of renewed U.S.-Iran diplomacy, ignite a larger conflict, and put Vice President Kamala Harris in a difficult position as she runs for the top spot.

In a Facebook post, Parsi said that the key point of his analysis is “If the Biden team truly wants to avoid getting dragged into a regional war, then they have to prioritize the U.S. interest of staying out of these wars over Israel’s ‘right to defend itself.’ ”
