The Fresno Police Department apprehended suspect Angel Xavier Gonzalez, 19, in connection with the shooting death of Simon Martinez, 25, exactly one year after the homicide occurred.

On Tuesday, a search warrant was served at an apartment complex near Shaw and Valentine Avenues, leading to Gonzalez’s arrest.

The homicide happened on July 16, 2023, when Martinez and his wife were leaving a party near Thorne and Lorena Avenues. The couple was confronted by an armed man demanding their property.

During the confrontation, a vehicle approached, and shots were fired from within, striking Simon and his wife. Simon was rushed to the hospital but died shortly after arrival. His wife survived the shooting.

Homicide detectives identified several individuals connected to the suspect vehicle, including the man who attempted the robbery. In 2023, multiple search warrants were executed, resulting in the arrests of Jesse Castillo, 22, on charges of robbery and murder, and Zachariah Rodriguez, 22, as an accessory to murder.

Detectives identified Gonzalez as the one who fatally shot Simon and wounded his wife. Gonzalez has been booked into Fresno County Jail on three felonies: murder, carjacking, and carrying a loaded stolen firearm.
