93.7 KISS Country brought an entertaining lineup to Woodward Park Rotary Amphitheater on Thursday night for the first event in its Summer Concert Series this year. The performers included Aaron Watson, Tigirlily Gold, Annie Bosko, and JJ Brown.

An intimate and participatory crowd showed up, many wearing cowboy hats and boots. The vendors offered delicious food, and the beer was cold — creating an energetic atmosphere for a weeknight.

Tigirlily Gold Takes the Stage

Then came the duo, Tigirlily Gold, consisting of sisters Krista and Kendra Slaubaugh from North Dakota. They won the New Duo or Group of the Year Award at this year’s Academy of Country Music Awards.

They played “Move On,” “I Tried A Ring On,” and the popular “Shoot Tequila,” which has garnered over 50 million views across social media.

Highlights of their set included their original song “Leroy,” that led into their version of the TLC classic, “No Scrubs.” Their sweet take on Leona Lewis’ classic hit, “Bleeding Love,” was amazing.

“The country fans here are absolutely incredible. It’s our first time playing in Fresno, and they’ve welcomed us with open arms and we’re looking forward to coming back,” said Kendra. “Country music is alive and well in Fresno!” Krista chimed in.

JJ Brown Sets the Stage

JJ Brown started off the night right. Dressed in a trucker hat and shades with his acoustic guitar, his sound emulates old school country. He played “Red Whiskey,” “Blue Eyes,” and others from his upcoming album “Spectrum.”

Annie Bosko Turns Up the Energy

Annie Bosko, a California native, took the stage next, showing Fresno what California country is all about. She performed her own renditions of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire,” and Buck Owens’ “Act Naturally.” The crowd’s favorite, including mine, was her newest single, “Neon Baby.”

Aaron Watson Closes the Night

Aaron Watson closed out the night with his band backing him up. His sound is very honky-tonk, bluesy, and it makes you want to dance. The violin and banjo gave it a more old school feel.

Aaron was engaged with the audience. The crowd grew louder and danced more with each song he played. My favorite was when he played, “Getaway Truck.”

It was a great first start to the Summer Concert Series. A pleasing demonstration on what might be to come for the rest of the year.
