The 48th annual Capitol Frog Jump, hosted by Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil, D-Jackson, brought together participants from the Senate, Assembly, and the public for a day of lively competition and community spirit.
The event is held as the unofficial kick-off to the Calaveras County Fair — home of the famed Frog Jump Jubilee — and saw a strong turnout this year, with nearly 70 frog jumpers taking part in the challenge.
The team of Assemblymember Luz Rivas, D-Arleta, secured victory in the farthest frog jump category with their frog, “Dua Leapa,” making an impressive leap of 12 feet and 9 inches.

In the shortest frog jump category, the Assembly Office of the Chief Clerk claimed the title with its frog, “Sir Mix a Lot,” hopping a total of 2 feet.
Media outlets also participated in the fun, with CBS 13 and CalMatters sending representatives. CalMatters reporter Alexei Koseff clinched the media category with his frog, “Baby,” jumping an impressive 8 feet and 7 inches.
Sen. Alvarado-Gil said, “I am thrilled to see such enthusiastic participation from our community and colleagues in the Senate and Assembly. The Capitol Frog Jump has become a cherished tradition that brings us together in the spirit of fun and camaraderie.”

The excitement continued as Sen. Maria Durazo, D-Los Angeles, initially a spectator, was persuaded by Alvarado-Gil to join the competition. Said Durazo, “Only for you Marie, I wouldn’t do this in a million years!”
