The Roosevelt High School regional principals and LEXIA: LETRS are sponsoring a showing of the documentary “Hopeville: How to Win the Reading Wars” this evening (Tuesday, April 16).
The event will start with a free dinner at 4:30 p.m. followed by a free showing of the film at 5:30 p.m. in the Audra McDonald Theatre at Roosevelt High, 4250 E. Tulare St.
The film’s goal is to create community momentum in support of improving student literacy, which is a problem not only in Fresno but around the nation. The U.S. ranks 125th in literacy out of 194 nations, and low literacy has contributed to high crime rates, unemployment, and other social issues.
Harvey Hubbell V, who has dyslexia and struggled with reading as a child, embarked on a personal quest to change how reading is taught in schools. Through the film Hubbell documents classroom solutions being implemented in schools and also tours the country to hear firsthand from those who have been handicapped by their inability to read with proficiency.
