The Business Journal is hosting an event on Thursday aimed at qualifying a revision of California’s Proposition 47 sentencing reform law for the November ballot.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Stamp Mural parking lot (1315 Van Ness Ave. in downtown Fresno).

Volunteers will collect signatures to support the Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act, which would rework 2014’s Prop 47.

Among other things, Prop. 47 increased the threshold for felony theft to $950. The law also reclassified several felonies to misdemeanors.

Advocates for retooling the law at the ballot box say retail theft, drug addiction, and homelessness have increased.

What the Revise Would Do

The new law would hold repeat thieves accountable and require mandatory drug treatment for repeat offenders.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Stamp Mural parking lot (1315 Van Ness Ave. in downtown Fresno).

The measure needs 546,651 signatures from registered voters statewide by April 23.

KMJ radio hosted a similar signing event on March 1.
