Fresno Chaffee Zoo’s newest baby orangutan has made her public debut, and she now has a name to go with it.
The four-week-old female Sumatran orangutan is beginning to explore the Kingdoms of Asia habitat with her mother, Negara.
The baby is Negara’s first with Busar, the male Sumatran orangutan who has lived at Fresno Chaffee Zoo for 29 years.
Zoo officials named the youngster Marigold, after the vibrant flower that symbolizes the sun.
The birth is also significant for the species. Sumatran orangutans are considered critically endangered in their natural habitat, according to the IUCN Red List.
Fresno Chaffee Zoo participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan and Saving Animals From Extinction program, both of which support conservation efforts for the species.
Marigold and Negara will continue to decide whether they want to spend time in their habitat or remain behind the scenes.
Visitors can look for the pair in the Kingdoms of Asia exhibit, while the zoo will continue posting updates on social media.
The zoo is also offering virtual adoptions of Marigold through its website.
