Americans could face sharply higher heating costs this winter as the war with Iran continues to drive up energy prices, according to Sanya Carley of Indiana University’s Energy Justice Lab.

The National Energy Assistance Directors Association projects U.S. home energy costs will rise 8.7% this winter, more than twice the latest annual inflation rate of 3.4%. Heating oil costs are projected to jump more than 31%.

Energy costs have already increased nearly 30% since 2021. Carley warned that higher bills could force struggling households to take on debt or cut spending on necessities, including food and medical care.
