The Fresno Police Department will conduct a bicycle and pedestrian safety operation Saturday, focusing on dangerous driving behaviors that put people walking or biking at risk.
The operation will run from noon to 10 p.m., with officers targeting violations such as speeding, illegal turns, failing to yield to pedestrians or bicyclists, and disregarding traffic signs and signals.
Police are reminding drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists to take precautions to reduce the risk of collisions and injuries.
Drivers are urged to slow down at intersections, yield to pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks, avoid blocking crosswalks while making right turns, and never drive impaired.
Pedestrians should use crosswalks when available, remain aware of approaching vehicles, and wear reflective clothing or carry flashlights when walking at night.
Police noted that a vehicle traveling 30 mph needs at least 90 feet to stop, emphasizing the importance of avoiding sudden movements into traffic.
Bicyclists are reminded to follow traffic laws, ride in the same direction as traffic, use hand signals, and equip their bicycles with a front white light and rear red reflector when riding at night.
They should also wear helmets, avoid riding too close to parked vehicles, use designated bike lanes when required, and yield to pedestrians.
The operation is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, administered through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
