The Trump administration admitted 16,292 refugees during fiscal 2026, with all but five coming from South Africa, according to federal data reported Friday by Axios.
Of those admitted, 16,287 were South Africans. The remaining five came from Afghanistan, Axios reported. The fiscal year ended Sept. 30.
President Donald Trump initially capped refugee admissions at 7,500 but raised the ceiling to 17,500 in May, prioritizing white South African Afrikaners.
His administration has cited alleged racial discrimination and violence against the group, although claims of a genocide have been rejected by researchers and a South African court.
The administration plans to keep the cap at 17,500 in fiscal 2027, again prioritizing Afrikaners.
Texas, Florida, and California received the most refugees, followed by Michigan and New York.
For comparison, the United States admitted 100,060 refugees in fiscal 2024 under former President Joe Biden.
The White House defended its policy as a humanitarian response.
