Fresno police identified a 42-year-old Fresno man Tuesday as the suspect critically wounded in an officer-involved shooting near Highway 41.

Police identified the man as David Rascon, who remained in critical condition at a local hospital after undergoing surgery.

The shooting happened after officers received a one-round ShotSpotter notification at about 2:44 a.m. near Orchard Street, north of Huntington Boulevard, police said.

Officers arrived within minutes and saw a man walking on Huntington Boulevard west of Orchard Street. Police said the man ran from officers while holding a firearm.

Officers followed him in patrol vehicles before getting out near Huntington Boulevard, west of the Highway 41 overpass. Police said Rascon then fired at officers, prompting two officers to return fire with their department-issued handguns.

Rascon was struck multiple times. No officers were hit by gunfire, police said.

A firearm police said was used by Rascon was recovered at the scene.

Both officers involved have been with the Fresno Police Department for four years and were placed on administrative leave.

Police said Rascon has prior arrests for assault on a peace officer and resisting arrest and is currently on parole.

The department said it would not release additional information about the investigation.
