Authorities are investigating the death of a man found unresponsive early Friday morning along Highway 140 and Station Avenue in Atwater, where evidence suggests he may have been bitten by at least one dog.

Deputies with the Merced County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and located the man on the shoulder of the road near his vehicle. Investigators initially believed the death may have been the result of a vehicle strike, but further investigation revealed evidence consistent with dog bites.

Five dogs believed to be associated with a nearby residence were taken for quarantine. Authorities said it is not yet known whether the dogs played any role in the man’s death.

The dogs’ owner, Gilberto Diaz Mora, 56, was arrested and booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of failing to turn over the dogs for quarantine and obstruction.

The cause of death remains under investigation pending an autopsy. Authorities are working to identify the man and notify his next of kin.
