Federal agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement were involved in a shooting Tuesday morning in Stanislaus County, authorities said, prompting freeway closures and a local investigation.
The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office said it is assisting with an officer‑involved shooting that occurred near Interstate 5 and Sperry Avenue. No local law enforcement officers were involved in the incident, the sheriff’s office said.
The person shot by ICE agents was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical attention, though officials have not released details on the individual’s condition or identity.
The on‑ and off‑ramps on I‑5 at Sperry Avenue were closed following the shooting and are expected to remain shut for the rest of the day, according to sheriff’s officials. Motorists were urged to expect significant delays and seek alternate routes.
Authorities have not released additional details on what led to the shooting. The sheriff’s office said it will provide updates as more information becomes available.
