President Donald Trump’s promise to cut inflation during his second term is blowing up at the diesel pump.

The average price for a gallon of diesel soared to an all-time high in California at $7.45 a gallon, AAA reported Tuesday.

And in the Bay Area, diesel prices are surging to nearly $8 a gallon in some cities.

The pre-Iran war record-high average for diesel in California was $7.01 on June 18, 2022.

Diesel Powers American Shipping

Because diesel is vital to transport trucks, ships, and railroads, consumers can expect the cost of virtually every product to climb during the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, economists say.

In addition, diesel “powers a lot of basic industries,” Vidya Mani, a visiting associate professor at Cornell University’s business school, told The New York Times. “Mining industries, chemical factories, clothing factories — a lot of those things come from diesel.”

The price of gas continues to rise in California and across the nation, as well.

AAA says the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is up more than one dollar since last month, hitting $4.02 on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s California average for regular is a nation-high $5.89. That’s 55 cents below the state’s all-time high of $6.44 set on June 14, 2022, according to AAA records.

‘Starting on Day One, We Will End Inflation’

Trump shouldn’t get all the blame for California’s sky-high fuel prices, however.

Taxes, refinery closures, and the state’s strict regulations for cleaner-burning gas also contribute, analysts say.

But Trump did make unilateral decisions to attack Iran and impose global tariffs. And he did say this during his 2024 presidential campaign:

“Starting on Day One, we will end inflation and make America affordable again — to bring down the prices of all goods.”
