California Highway Patrol and San Francisco Police Department officers prevented a large group of bicyclists from entering the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge on Saturday, issuing 85 citations and seizing 85 bicycles.

The CHP alerted SFPD to the group, which was riding recklessly through city streets and was believed to be heading for the bridge with the intent of taking it over, officials said. As officers responded, the SFPD Real Time Investigations Center tracked the group and provided updates to law enforcement personnel.

The cyclists eventually accessed the bridge via a wrong-way off-ramp, where they were met by a large contingent of CHP and SFPD officers, authorities said.

Throughout the incident, riders were seen swerving in and out of traffic, riding directly at moving vehicles, and coming dangerously close to pedestrians. Authorities said the actions posed serious risks to both the public and the cyclists.

All 85 participants were detained, cited for riding a bicycle onto a freeway, and released. Their bicycles were seized at the scene.
