A driver was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of driving under the influence after running a red light in Atwater, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers with CHP’s Merced-area graveyard crew stopped a utility vehicle on Santa Fe Street after it failed to stop at a red light at Buhach Road. The driver was determined to be under the influence and was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI.

Authorities said that while utility vehicles are not intended for use on public roadways, drivers are still required to follow all traffic laws when operating them on streets.

CHP officials urged the public to make safe decisions before getting behind the wheel.
