The Fresno Police Department will conduct a bicycle and pedestrian safety operation Saturday aimed at reducing dangerous driving behaviors that put people walking and biking at risk.

The operation will run from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will focus on violations such as speeding, illegal turns, failure to yield to pedestrians and bicyclists, and failure to stop at signs and signals, the department said in a statement.

Police said the effort is intended to improve roadway safety by targeting behaviors that commonly lead to crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists.

Officials also provided safety reminders for the public.

Pedestrians are encouraged to use crosswalks, remain visible, and avoid stepping into the path of vehicles.

Drivers are urged to follow speed limits, yield at crosswalks, avoid blocking intersections, and never drive impaired.

Bicyclists are reminded to obey traffic laws, use proper lighting at night, ride in the direction of traffic, and yield to pedestrians.

Funding for the operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
