Madera County librarians invite the community to come celebrate Pi Day with all things circular.

On Saturday, the Chowchilla Branch will hold a Pi themed event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., showcasing how math can be fun for all ages.

“Math is everywhere in our daily life,” said librarian Yvette Herrera. “We’re going to be using it in a very different way but fun.”

The library will serve circle-shaped refreshments and host activities around spherical bubbles. It is a chance to come together and explore how math shows up in everyday life.

Why Is Pi Celebrated on March 14?

Pi or π is the circumference of a circle divided by the circle’s diameter. The number is a mathematical constant, meaning it’s the same for any circle no matter its size.

It has grown in popularity due to being an irrational number, meaning it goes on forever and never repeats a sequence of numbers. It has been calculated to more than one trillion digits!

But people simply use the approximation of 3.14 or the first three digits of the infinite number. Now, folks use March 14 or 3/14 to celebrate the unique and helpful number.

Library Receives Grant

A Simons Foundation grant, provided to only 20 libraries across the county, is providing funding for this event. The Chowchilla Branch is the only library in California to receive a grant.

The $10,000 in funding will boost community engagement with hands-on and interactive math experiences. There will be library events for Infinity Day on Aug. 8 and Fibonacci Day on Nov. 23.
