A 10-year-old was detained Wednesday after a 7-year-old student was stabbed during an after-school program at a Mountain View elementary school, police said.
The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. at Bubb Elementary School, according to the Mountain View Police Department. Emergency dispatchers received reports that a student in the school’s play area had been stabbed.
Responding officers placed the campus on lockdown while securing the area and located the victim, who had suffered three stab wounds to the shoulder, police said. Personnel from the Mountain View Fire Department treated the child at the scene before releasing the student to a parent.
Police recovered a kitchen knife believed to have been used in the stabbing.
The suspect fled before officers arrived. During a neighborhood search, officers reviewed residential video, and a patrol officer later identified the suspect from prior contacts, police said.
A Los Altos Police Department K-9 unit helped track the suspect from the school to the suspect’s residence, where officers coordinated with a guardian and detained the child without incident.
The suspect was transferred to clinicians with Pacific Clinics, Santa Clara County’s juvenile mental health services provider.
Police said the suspect does not attend Bubb Elementary School and was not enrolled in the after-school program.
