A Fresno man has been charged in a federal indictment with drug trafficking and firearms offenses after authorities say he was found with nearly 2 pounds of methamphetamine and multiple guns.
A federal grand jury on Thursday returned a three-count indictment against John Angel Sanchez, 56, charging him with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense, and being a felon in possession of a firearm, U.S. Attorney Eric Grant announced.
According to court documents, Sanchez was found in possession of three firearms and nearly 2 pounds of methamphetamine on Jan. 15. Authorities said Sanchez is prohibited from possessing firearms because he has 11 felony convictions, including possession of controlled substances, possession of controlled substances for sale, transportation of controlled substances for sale and the manufacture or import of an unlawful weapon.
At the time of his arrest, Sanchez was serving a term of post-release community supervision following his most recent felony convictions in Fresno County, according to prosecutors.
If convicted, Sanchez faces a minimum statutory penalty of five years in prison for possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and a maximum statutory penalty of life in prison and a $10 million fine.
