The latest report from AAA shows that the war in Iran is driving the average price of gas in California toward $6 — or more — throughout the state.

The highest prices for fuel are along the coast and in mountain locations. The statewide average, according to AAA, on Thursday morning was $5.37 a gallon.

That’s $1.77 above the national average of $3.60 and reflects California’s higher fuel taxes, tighter environmental regulations, and reduced refinery capacity.

Mono County in the eastern Sierra has California’s highest average price for regular gas at $6.16 a gallon, AAA reports. The lowest average price in the state is $5.02 in Lassen County.

Fresno Gas Prices

Fresno’s average price is $5.32 for regular, $5.52 for mid-grade, $5.74 for premium, and $6.16 for diesel.

However, bargain shoppers in Fresno can find prices well below those averages by going to GasBuddy.

How Long Will High Gas Prices Last?

Gas prices are tied to the cost of crude oil, which is soaring due to the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. In fact, the International Energy Agency says the war is “creating the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market.”

On Thursday, the price of oil jumped more than 7% to $100 a barrel for international Brent crude. Meanwhile, U.S. crude oil rose to above $95 a barrel.

“The global oil market is contending with the ramifications of the war in the Middle East. Beyond the direct damage to energy infrastructure in the region, the crisis has led to a near halt in tanker movements through the Strait of Hormuz,” the IAE said.

It’s estimated that 20% of the world’s energy supply goes through the Strait of Hormuz.

So, gas prices aren’t likely to drop significantly until the Strait of Hormuz resumes normal operations.
