Nearly nine months after being detained by immigration authorities, the Iranian-born manager of Pismo’s Restaurant, Psalm Behpoor, is back with his family in Fresno.
Last week, the government declined to appeal a bond hearing for Behpoor, meaning as he awaits his future hearing, he can be with his wife and son, attorney Steve Simonian told GV Wire.
Behpoor was released on Friday on $20,000 bail. Calls to Behpoor by GV Wire were not immediately returned.
Behpoor Came to the US When He Was 3 Years Old
In June 2025, ICE took Behpoor into custody, citing a burglary he committed in 2002 when he was teenager. A judge in 2024 reduced the conviction to a non-deportable, nonviolent felony. Behpoor came to the U.S. from Iran when he was 3 years old when his mother fled the Ayatollah’s regime as a political prisoner.
Later in his life, he started work at Pismo’s Restaurant in Fresno, eventually becoming general manager.
His story caught national news and brought out support from local and national politicians, including Rep. Jim Costa, D-Fresno, who visited the ICE detention facility in Kern County where Behpoor was held. Fresno City councilmembers Mike Karbassi and Annalisa Perea also wrote letters of support on behalf of Behpoor.
In November 2025, to help Behpoor’s case, Gov. Gavin Newsom gave him a “full and unconditional” pardon after Behpoor sent him a request for clemency.
Behpoor now awaits his next hearing, Simonian said.
