Iran is prepared for a U.S. ground invasion and will not seek a ceasefire or enter into negotiations, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a defiant video interview from Tehran as U.S. and Israeli bombardments continue to hammer the country.
Speaking with “NBC Nightly News” anchor Tom Llamas, Araghchi dismissed the impact of the recent killings of Iran’s supreme leader and top military commanders, asserting that all assassinated leaders have been replaced and “everything is in order.”
The interview comes as the war between Iran, the U.S., and Israel rapidly spreads across the region, highlighted by the recent sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena.
According to a CNN report citing Sri Lankan officials, at least 87 bodies have been recovered from the sunken vessel, while the Sri Lankan Navy rescued 32 others. Araghchi noted that approximately 130 people were believed to be on board when the first distress call was issued on Wednesday.
Claims of Warship Being Unarmed
During the interview, Llamas pressed the foreign minister on the ship’s destruction. Araghchi claimed the vessel was unarmed and engaged in “peaceful training” when it was destroyed by the U.S. The IRIS Dena had been sailing home from an east Indian port after participating in an international naval conference hosted by India in February.
When Llamas questioned why a battleship would be sailing without weapons, Araghchi maintained it was strictly a training mission. The Pentagon has since released video footage of the attack, showing a massive explosion at the ship’s stern, alongside still frames of the vessel sinking.
Despite the heavy military and leadership losses, Araghchi insisted the U.S. is losing the broader conflict. When asked by Llamas if Iran could win the war, the foreign minister argued that the U.S. has already failed to achieve its primary goal of a “clean, rapid victory.”
Araghchi stated that because the U.S. failed its “Plan A,” it is now moving to a “Plan B,” which he predicted would result in an even bigger failure. When Llamas rebutted that the deaths of Iran’s supreme leader and military targets hardly constituted a U.S. failure, Araghchi questioned what the U.S. goal actually was, reiterating that the Iranian government’s structure remains fully operational.
