Britain’s Ministry of Defense says a drone that struck RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus on Sunday was not launched from Iran, according to Middle East Eye.
The Shahed-type drone hit a hangar housing American U-2 spy planes, causing a fire but no casualties or equipment damage. Officials believe the drone evaded detection by flying low and slow.
The MoD says the drone was likely launched by a pro-Iran militia in Lebanon or western Iraq, though investigators have not conclusively determined its origin.
The attack occurred before Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the U.S. could use UK bases to target Iranian missile sites.
Cyprus has criticized Britain for failing to stop the drone or warn residents. Two additional drones were intercepted Monday.
British Defense Secretary John Healey traveled to Cyprus on Wednesday. France and Greece have deployed fighter jets and defense systems to the island, while Britain is sending a Royal Navy destroyer. Local residents near the bases have been evacuated.
