A driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after being found with a blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit during a nighttime traffic stop, the Madera Police Department said early Sunday.

During the night shift, an officer conducted a traffic stop while on routine patrol. Following an investigation, the driver was determined to be operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, with a blood alcohol content exceeding twice the legal limit.

Police said the stop prevented a potential tragedy.

“If you’re going to drink, please don’t drive,” the department said in a statement. “Call a friend, grab a rideshare, or find another safe way home — because one bad decision can change lives forever.”
