The Kern County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday issued a temporary water advisory for the Lerdo Detention Facilities.

The advisory comes as part of ongoing maintenance at the facilities. The State Water Resources Control Board recommended using an alternative drinking water supply out of an abundance of caution.

Effective immediately, tap water at Lerdo will not be used for drinking. The sheriff’s office said potable water is being provided throughout the facilities, with water coolers distributed to all housing units to ensure safe drinking water for staff and inmates.

Officials said they are working closely with regulatory agencies to complete maintenance and conduct water quality testing. Updates will be issued once the water is confirmed safe for normal use.

“The health and safety of our staff and those in our custody remain our highest priority,” the sheriff’s office said.
