The California Highway Patrol responded to a Jan. 18 two-vehicle crash on Clovis Avenue, south of Golden State Boulevard, that left a 23-year-old Fresno man dead, the agency said.

The Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office identified the man Tuesday as Michael Molano.

Investigators determined that a 40-year-old man was driving a 2021 Freightliner northbound on Clovis Avenue and was in the process of making a U-turn to head southbound when Molano, driving a 2003 Chevrolet S-10 pickup, was traveling southbound on Clovis Avenue.

Because of heavy fog, Molano’s pickup collided with the trailer of the Freightliner, authorities said.

The Freightliner driver felt the impact and pulled to the right shoulder with the pickup lodged under the trailer. Molano’s vehicle was engulfed in flames while trapped underneath the trailer.

Molano sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said the Freightliner driver was not injured.

CHP said alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.
