The Clovis Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint Saturday from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at an undisclosed location in the city, officials said.

Checkpoints are set up based on data showing areas with higher incidents of impaired driving crashes, police said. The department said the goal is to promote public safety by identifying drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sergeant Abby Padgett, traffic supervisor, said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Police reminded residents that driving under the influence isn’t limited to alcohol; some prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana can also impair driving. First-time DUI offenders face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.

The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
