Noting how divided politically California has become, the association of the the state’s law enforcement heads decided to give out two endorsements for the next governor — one for Bay Area Rep. Eric Swalwell, and one for former Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.
A news release from the California Police Chiefs Association says that rather then choose a leader based on party lines, the group would rather inform voters about their pick regarding public safety leadership.
The association said while voters approach elections on party affiliation, concerns about crime, victim protection, and community transcend partisan politics.
“As voters prepare to make decisions in a highly partisan environment, CPCA’s responsibility is to highlight public safety experience and leadership,” said Jason Salazar, president of the association. “Our endorsement is not about politics. It is about ensuring voters understand which candidates in each major party have demonstrated a commitment to public safety and effective law enforcement.”
Swalwell a Former Prosecutor, Bianco a Sheriff
Swalwell, D-Dublin, became a U.S. representative after a career as an Alameda County prosecutor. The association said he has emphasized community safety as a “central priority of his campaign.” Having been raised in a law enforcement household, his personal and professional experience helped shape his approach to public safety, the group said.
“No one will work harder to protect Californians as the next governor,” said Congressman Eric Swalwell in a statement to GV Wire. “That’s why I’m grateful for the support of the California Police Chiefs Association. I’m a former prosecutor, my father was a cop, and my brothers currently serve. Supporting public safety will always be a high priority in order to keep all of us safe.”
At the other side of the state and political spectrum, Bianco has more than three decades of law enforcement experience. The group said that as sheriff, he oversees patrol operations, detention facilities, court services, and training programs in one of California’s largest counties. He has focused on protecting victims, ensuring accountability, and reducing crime, the release stated.
Bianco’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
Police Chiefs Backed Villaraigosa Over Newsom in 2018
The two-candidate endorsement is a divergence for the association. In 2018, the last race without an incumbent, the association backed former L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s run for governor against Gavin Newsom, who would ultimately win that election.
Villaraigosa is again running for governor.
