A longtime judge on “The Great British Bake Off” announced she is stepping down from the hit baking competition after nine series, saying it is time to slow down and enjoy life away from the tent.
In a statement on social media, Prue Leith said she has decided to leave the show after judging more than 400 challenges since joining the series. Leith, 86, called Bake Off “a fabulous part of my life” and said she has “genuinely loved it,” but added that now feels like the right moment to step back.
“I’m sure I’ll miss working with my fellow judge Paul, Alison and Noel and the teams at Love Productions and Channel 4,” Leith said, referring to co-judge Paul Hollywood and hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding. “But now feels like the right time to step back.”
Leith joined “The Great British Bake Off” in 2017, replacing Mary Berry when the program moved from the BBC to Channel 4. A celebrated chef, restaurateur, and food writer, she quickly became known for her sharp critiques balanced with warmth and encouragement toward contestants.
Since its debut in 2010, “Bake Off” has become one of Britain’s most popular television shows, drawing millions of viewers and spawning international versions. The competition challenges amateur bakers with technical tests, signature bakes and elaborate showstoppers.
Leith said she plans to spend more time on personal pursuits, including enjoying her garden during the summer months. She expressed confidence in her eventual replacement, saying whoever joins the team “will love it as much as I have.”
“I feel very lucky to have been part of it,” she said.
