A driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after being stopped for speeding more than 100 miles per hour on Highway 99 in Merced County, the California Highway Patrol said Wednesday.
CHP said an officer stopped the vehicle traveling northbound on Highway 99 just north of Liberty Avenue. During the traffic stop, the driver was determined to be under the influence of alcohol.
CHP officials said brightly colored party drinks were found inside the vehicle.
Authorities warned that driving at excessive speeds significantly reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes, and that alcohol further heightens the danger.
CHP urged motorists to make plans for a safe ride home if they plan to drink and to obey posted speed limits to protect everyone on the roadway.
