The Madera Police Department will hold a DUI checkpoint on Friday from 7:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location, the department announced Tuesday.

Police said the checkpoint locations are based on data showing a high number of impaired-driving-related crashes. The department said the goal is to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” the department said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Officials reminded the public that impairment can come not only from alcohol but also from prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana, which remains illegal to use while driving. Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
