Eric Grant was sworn in Tuesday to continue serving as the court-appointed U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of California, following a vote by the district’s judges to reappoint him under federal statute.
Chief U.S. District Judge Troy L. Nunley administered the oath, extending Grant’s tenure beyond the 120-day interim appointment he received from Attorney General Pam Bondi on Aug. 11.
Grant, a longtime Department of Justice attorney, previously worked in Washington, D.C., including as a deputy assistant attorney general in the Environment and Natural Resources Division, where he oversaw more than 100 litigators.
He also served in the Office of Legal Counsel and spent decades in private practice, arguing cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, the California Supreme Court and other courts nationwide.
“I have been honored to lead an excellent team of dedicated attorneys and other public servants,” Grant said in a statement, adding that he looks forward to continuing work with federal, state, local and tribal partners.
A Modesto native who later raised his family in Sacramento County, Grant holds economics and law degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. The U.S. attorney’s office oversees federal prosecutions and civil litigation across 34 counties in the Central Valley and Sierra, with offices in Sacramento, Fresno and Bakersfield.
